Does your company really need an internal community?
Carter Gibson thinks so.
Carter originated Google's Internal Community Management team and internal content moderation strategy. As the Internal Community Management Program Lead, he leads strategies to establish foundations of moderation, amplify positive contributions, and advocate Googlers' needs to decision makers. The challenge? Retain, define, and evolve Google's world-class corporate culture as it adapts to an online-first world.
With over a decade of experience in online community management, Carter has fostered community in many spaces - from gaming (KIXEYE) to digital art (PicsArt) - before being hired at Google. Prior to his current role, he led Google+'s Content and Community Management team.
In Episode 33 of Create Community, Carter chats with Marsha about his winding career and personal journey and all things internal community.
“I think that we're well beyond the idea that we have a 9-5 and that's it. Especially in tech, we make our jobs part of our identity, and it happens naturally. People are talking about politics, video games, parenting, and about their lives in a way that isn't work related. So, if your company is talking about things that aren't work related, that's what internal community actually is.”
